It's National Dessert Day! Here are the Kentucky Bake Shops You Should Try

It’s Friday and National Dessert Day, so there’s no better way to celebrate the end of the week than with a sweet treat. If you’re a cake lover like me or prefer ice cream and pie instead, this list features the Kentucky bakeries you should try today.

1. Peter Cave Cupcake Shop and Bakery

Located in downtown Leitchfield, this bakery is a hidden gem. I’m a firm believer that the eyes do eat first, and these cupcakes are as pretty as they are tasty. Peter Cave Cupcake Shop and Bakery specializes in cupcakes, but also offers cake cups, and occasionally cookies and cheesecake. The customer service truly could not be better, and the prices are extremely cheap ($3 for a gourmet cupcake). Out of all the bakeries listed below, I’d give Peter Cave Cupcake Shop and Bakery the highest recommendation.

2. Please and Thank You

If you’re local to Louisville, you’ll know this was a given. Boasting the best chocolate chip cookies in Kentucky, this coffee shop is actually renowned for its cookies. Anytime I’m in the NUlU area, I make sure to swing by for a latte and a chocolate chip cookie. Please and Thank You also sells dough and cookies by the bag if you want to take these cookies home with you.

3. North Lime Donuts

Located in both Louisville and Lexington, this is a donut shop you can’t miss. With daily specials like Chocolate Chip Pancake, S’mores, and Dead Velvet, in addition to their regular menu, there is a donut to suit everyone’s taste here. These donuts are thicker and flakier than the average donut, and rich enough that just one will leave you completely satisfied. Gluten free and vegan donuts are available as well. I’d compare this dough to a mixture between a pastry and cake, which makes for a standout sweet. Visit in March and participate in Donut Madness by voting on your favorite donut.

4. The Big Dipper

If you’ve been to Owensboro, especially near Moonlite, you know that The Big Dipper consistently has a line out to the highway. WIth affordable prices and a plethora of ice cream options, this place is a frequent stop for Owensboro locals. While I opted for a plain and smooth swirl cone, there are plenty of decadent options to satisfy your sweet cravings.

5. Dewster’s

Ice creams, cakes, cookies, and pies call this Elizabethtown shop home. I personally love their creamy ice cream in a crunchy waffle cone, but their pies are certainly worth trying as well. If you have food allergies or dietary preferences, Dewster’s also offers dairy free and gluten free options.

No matter where you are in Kentucky, there are plenty of places to buy mouthwatering desserts. Try celebrating National Dessert Day with one of these local shops!
